Being prepared for an emergency on your rural property is essential for ensuring the safety of yourself, your family, and your livelihood.

In this blog post, we’ll introduce you to a free self-assessment scorecard called “Is Your Rural Property Emergency Prepared?” designed specifically for Australian agricultural businesses. This quick and easy scorecard will take about 3 minutes to complete and provide you with a comprehensive report on your current level of emergency preparedness.

What the Scorecard Covers

This scorecard assesses your preparedness across several key areas, aligning with the four fence posts of effective rural emergency response:

The Right First Aid Equipment: Does your property have readily accessible and appropriately stocked first aid kits tailored to the specific hazards of your agricultural operations? This includes considering specialised kits for animal-related injuries, machinery accidents, and other potential emergencies.

The Right First Aid Training: Are you and your workers trained in Remote Area First Aid, CPR, and other relevant emergency response skills? Does your training cover situations specific to the rural environment, such as managing trauma, dealing with venomous bites or stings, and providing care in remote locations? The scorecard will explore the level of training and its relevance to your property’s needs.

Critical Incident Response Processes: Do you have established procedures for managing critical incidents? This includes clear communication protocols, designated roles and responsibilities, and plans for contacting emergency services and coordinating with external resources. The scorecard will assess the existence and effectiveness of these processes.

Mental Health Awareness Following Critical Incidents: Recognising the significant impact that emergencies can have on mental wellbeing, the scorecard also considers your preparedness for supporting mental health after a critical incident. This includes awareness of potential mental health challenges, recognising when our workmates may be struggling and access to support resources, and strategies for promoting psychological recovery.

Benefits of Using the Scorecard

By taking a few minutes to complete the scorecard, you’ll gain valuable insights into your current level of emergency preparedness. The scorecard will:

Identify areas where you are well-prepared

Highlight areas where you can improve your preparedness

Provide you with targeted recommendations for enhancing your emergency response plan

Taking Action Based on Your Results

Once you’ve completed the scorecard, you’ll receive a personalised report outlining your strengths and weaknesses in emergency preparedness. Use this report as a roadmap to improve your preparedness. Here are some steps you can take:

If your score indicates that you are well-prepared, congratulations! However, it’s always a good idea to review and update your emergency plan regularly.

If your score identifies areas for improvement, focus on addressing those areas first. This could involve developing an emergency plan, enrolling in a Remote Area First Aid course, or purchasing essential supplies.

Free 15-Minute Consultation

We understand that navigating emergency preparedness can be overwhelming. If you’d like to discuss your scorecard results and get personalised recommendations for improving your preparedness, we offer a free, no-obligation 15-minute phone consultation with one of our emergency preparedness specialists.

Conclusion

The “Is Your Rural Property Emergency Prepared?” scorecard is a valuable tool that can help you assess your current preparedness and identify areas for improvement. I’ve taken the time to deeply consider our core mission: “That all Rural Australians have the confidence and skills to act in an emergency.”

This vision, while powerful, needed to be reinforced and reconsidered for me given the unique challenges and needs of the Australian Agriculture Industry.

I have the best job in the world!! But it has challenges such as extended time away from home. Added to this is that I have an underlying health condition. Most of the time I’m fine. Occasionally I feel a little unwell but last year it sat me on my arse for a while. So I needed to take stock and ask myself “Why do I Do What I do? Why subject myself to this lifestyle?” Back to the vision statement. Reset. Go again, because I believe in it. To my core.

Why this focus?

We know the agricultural sector faces unique first aid challenges:

Isolation: Remote locations, often with limited access to professional medical help.

Hazards: Exposure to various risks like farm machinery accidents, animal interactions, extreme weather, and chemical exposure.

Time-sensitive emergencies: Every minute counts in a rural emergency. Quick, confident action can mean the difference between life and death.

So our Commitment is as follows:

At Rural and Remote First Aid, we are committed to:

Empowering farmers, graziers, and rural workers with the knowledge and skills to handle emergencies effectively.

Providing accessible and high-quality first aid training specifically designed for the agricultural context.

Promoting a culture of safety and preparedness within the agricultural community.

Why I Do What I Do:

Personally, I believe in the power of first aid to save lives. Particularly when I work on the ambulance in a rural community, I understand the importance of being prepared for the unexpected. I’ve witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of accidents and the crucial role that timely first aid can play.

My goal is to ensure that every person working in the Australian Agriculture Industry has the confidence and skills to implement the ‘4 fence posts of Rural emergency response’:

1. The right First Aid equipment: Access to and knowledge of using appropriate first aid kits and any necessary specialist equipment.

2. The right First Aid training: Regular, up-to-date training relevant to the specific hazards of their workplace.

3. Critical Incident Response process: A clear and practiced plan for responding to and managing critical incidents, including communication protocols and roles.

4. Mental Health Awareness following Critical Incidents: Understanding the potential psychological impact of critical incidents on individuals and the importance of seeking support.

Recognise and respond to a range of emergencies.

Provide immediate care to injured or ill individuals.

Make critical decisions in high-pressure situations.

Improve overall safety within their workplace.

Moving Forward:

In 2025, we will continue to work tirelessly to achieve our vision. We will:

Develop innovative training programs that address the specific needs of different agricultural sectors.

Collaborate with industry partners to promote workplace safety and first aid awareness.

Advocate for improved access to emergency medical services in rural and remote areas.

We believe that by working together, we can create a safer and healthier future for the Australian Agriculture Industry.

It also kicks off Mental Health week. It doesn’t seem like we need too much of a reminder that Mental Health issues are increasingly common. Particularly in the current craziness of all that is going on around us. Even more so when when much of it seems to be beyond our control.

The term Mental Health is actually defined by the World Health Organisation as a positive attribute ie to have good Mental Health is a good thing. It’s the same as Physical Health … it can good health or poor health. And like physical health there are things we can do to proactively look after it, but sometimes we get unhealthy for any number of reasons. And that’s when we need to do something to restore good health again.

So remember we are all on this rock together, be kind and supportive and utilise the resources that are around if you are feeling like it all is getting away from you too much at the moment. Below are some useful contacts.

The 10th October is World Mental Health Day.
