The late afternoon sun cast long shadows across the parched earth as Matt mustered a stubborn beast. A large unseen loose rock sent the motorbike off in an unexpected direction throwing Matt violently onto a twisted stump of an old mallee tree. Phone reception was non existent, but Matt wasn’t helpless, he made the call back to base on his two way alerting them to his predicament before going in to action. His dusty first-aid kit became a lifeline.

The bike was more banged up than Matt with a burst tyre and buckled wheel that needed some serious work. Matt’s injury wasn’t going to kill him but having the right gear in a time of need is satisfying and once the bleeding was staunched and the pain killers kicked in all Matt could do was wait for the cavalry to arrive.

About an hour later, a plume of dust announced his rescue. Matt was taken to the hospital to be checked over thoroughly and whilst there the doctor praised his first aid skills. “Lucky you were prepared,” he rumbled.
