Why I do what I do!
I received an email last week. It was in the evening after we had finished the ‘after dinner’ scenario. I sank back into the armchair for a little bit of no brainer content on the internet to help me switch off. Instead, this:
“Scott, I had to put into place what I learnt in the course you ran at Stegbar Windows. An old gentleman in his 70s fell over in front of me having a heart attack at first I was clueless I didn’t want to know about it. But then I had some sort of premonition if I don’t do something he’s dead. I did everything that you taught us in the course. For 11 minutes before the ambulance arrived. Just a thank you for teaching me what you know and the way you teach it sticks with you so thank you for helping me able to make a difference.”
A follow up to this is that I contacted the individual a few days later to check on his welfare, as CPR events can take a heavy toll. He sent me a screenshot of the text that he received from the patients daughter. The patient had survived and was out of ICU. She thanked him for saving her fathers life.
When disaster occurs we don’t rise to our expectations, we fall to the level of our training (quote attributed to the ancient Greek poet Archilochus).
That’s why we train in First Aid regularly. That’s why I teach it.
