First aid is a critical skill that can, in worst cases, make a life-or-death difference in an emergency or in non life-or-death situations greatly reduce the severity/impact of an injury or illness.

However, simply knowing some basic techniques is not enough. Even having some topic knowledge is most likely not going to end so well if we don’t have a process.

Effective first aid requires a structured approach, guided by clear guidelines and procedures.

2024 was a year of reflection, challenge and refinement for Rural and Remote First Aid. I’ve taken the time to deeply consider our core mission: “That all Rural Australians have the confidence and skills to act in an emergency.”

This vision, while powerful, needed to be reinforced and reconsidered for me given the unique challenges and needs of the Australian Agriculture Industry.

I have the best job in the world!! But it has challenges such as extended time away from home. Added to this is that I have an underlying health condition. Most of the time I’m fine. Occasionally I feel a little unwell but last year it sat me on my arse for a while. So I needed to take stock and ask myself “Why do I Do What I do? Why subject myself to this lifestyle?” Back to the vision statement. Reset. Go again, because I believe in it. To my core.

Why this focus?

We know the agricultural sector faces unique first aid challenges:

• Isolation: Remote locations, often with limited access to professional medical help.
• Hazards: Exposure to various risks like farm machinery accidents, animal interactions, extreme weather, and chemical exposure.
• Time-sensitive emergencies: Every minute counts in a rural emergency. Quick, confident action can mean the difference between life and death.

So our Commitment is as follows:

• Empowering farmers, graziers, and rural workers with the knowledge and skills to handle emergencies effectively.
• Providing accessible and high-quality first aid training specifically designed for the agricultural context.

Why I Do What I Do:

Personally, I believe in the power of first aid to save lives. Particularly when I work on the ambulance in a rural community, I understand the importance of being prepared for the unexpected. I’ve witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of accidents and the crucial role that timely first aid can play.

My goal is to ensure that every person working in the Australian Agriculture Industry has the confidence and skills to implement the ‘4 fence posts of Rural emergency response’:

• 1. The right First Aid equipment: Access to and knowledge of using appropriate first aid kits and any necessary specialist equipment.
• 2. The right First Aid training: Regular, up-to-date training relevant to the specific hazards of their workplace.
• 3. Critical Incident Response process: A clear and practiced plan for responding to and managing critical incidents, including communication protocols and roles.
• 4. Mental Health Awareness following Critical Incidents: Understanding the potential psychological impact of critical incidents on individuals and the importance of seeking support.

• Recognise and respond to a range of emergencies.
  
• Provide immediate care to injured or ill individuals.
  
• Make critical decisions in high-pressure situations.
  
• Improve overall safety within their workplace.
  

Moving Forward:

In 2025, we will continue to work tirelessly to achieve our vision. We will:

• Develop innovative training programs that address the specific needs of different agricultural sectors.
• Collaborate with industry partners to promote workplace safety and first aid awareness.
• Advocate for improved access to emergency medical services in rural and remote areas.

We believe that by working together, we can create a safer and healthier future for the Australian Agriculture Industry.

Create a communication flowchart/process: This requires bit more thought than just ‘call the Homestead’. Whoever answers the call (maybe not initially, but the person who assumes control) needs to have what I refer to as the ‘Keys to the Kingdom’. This person needs to have the authorisation to move assets around, alter workflows, etc. This person may have to make some big operational decisions that have some sort of cost attached. All information and communication needs to go out through this person and back in through that person. In a prolonged event, this role might need to be shared

Use simple yet clear and common languages: Just the facts, simple but clear language. If you know things like the GCS to measure conscious state then use it because it is quick, simple and effective. Spend a moment to gather all the vital signs you can (particularly the big 3, Conscious State, Pulse and Breathing) and call them through in one communication, rather than getting 1, calling through, getting the next, calling through, etc.

The right documents can lead you: Note pads require you to remember everything. Gather or design a set of reporting pads that are able to be put in First Aid kits and bigger note pads or A4 documents that guide you to the questions and processes of good First Aid treatments and reporting. It will remove the guess work and it helps you to speak the same language over the 2 way. We have developed packs to help with this process and it has been designed to match the Remote Area First Aid course and our Critical Incident response course.

Create cheat sheets: Small business card sized notes that remind you and your team of the basics. What is a GCS and how do I calculate it? Put it on a small card. What does AMPLE stand for? Put it on a card. What is your approach? Primary Survey, Main Problem, Secondary Survey, etc. Stick them in your front line First Aid kits.

Document everything: it makes you and your organisation a better First Aid operation: Don’t try to remember everything. When working on the ambulance we are encouraged to check the app as often as possible and practical. There’s enough to remember, especially when you don’t do it all the time. Plus it protects you and your organisation down the track as you have a good and consistent practice that you have not only followed, but documented that you followed it.

Using the feedback we’ve gained over the years from working with some of Australia’s largest Pastoral Companies, it was identified that keeping good, accurate records in a First Aid situation wasn’t easy and the right tools simply didn’t exist. So we have developed the Emergency Report Pack! It contains;

• 1 x duplicate book for the Homestead/Office
• 4 x A6 sized matching notepads
• 6 x Primary Approach process cards (credit card sized)
• 6 x Vital Signs values cards (Conscious State, Pulse rate, Breathing rate, Blood Pressure)
