Shocktober is an initiative designed to bring awareness to Sudden Cardiac Arrest and the need for CPR and Defibrillation.

Many people think that Cardiac Arrest only happens to older people with a pre-existing heart condition. And whilst we recognise that there are risk factors in that case, many other conditions can lead to Cardiac Arrest. Including Asthma and Anaphylaxis.

Recognising Cardiac Arrest: Using our DR ABCD Primary Survey approach, once we establish that the patient is not breathing effectively then …… Call ….. Push …. Shock.

Call for Help, Push on the Chest (CPR), Shock (get the defibrillator on as quickly as possible and follow its prompts)

And remember, Cardiac Arrest does not discriminate based on age.

How are your CPR skills? Maybe consider a toolbox meeting where you run through a basic unconscious patient response approach. Then talk through the CPR process, and how to get help appropriately and where it will come from. How long can you expect to wait for help to arrive and who else can you call on to assist (neighbours, other local resources, etc.)?
